MASTER CHRIS LUTH
Founder: Pacific School of Tai Chi & Chi Gong... **40th ANNIVERSARY ** Private Instruction, Workshops & Advanced Teacher Training with... 45 yr. Master Teacher, 2x National Champion, Chief Judge for U.S. National Tai Chi Competitions and U.S.A. & International Chinese Martial Arts Halls of Fame member
INDIVIDUALIZED PRIVATE INSTRUCTION
I applaud your interest in bettering your health and expanding your life-skills through the ancient arts of Tai Chi Chuan and/or Chi Gong (Qi Gong) and I look forward to assisting you on that journey. These are arts that I have practiced intensively for over 45 years (since my childhood).....and have taught as a full-time profession for over 40 years....and as such, they are an integral part of my life and my way of viewing the world.
"Thanks for the introduction to Tai Chi (and for answering my questions).... you made it meaningful and fun for me" ...... Jim Bower (beginner)
In 2001, I retired from teaching "public classes" in Southern California (after about 25 years of doing so). While still maintaining my international workshop schedule and my "Tai Chi In Paradise Retreats".... I decided to focus my "group format" teaching exclusively on training Teachers and upper-level Advanced practitioners (with a minimum of 15 years experience).....AND... offering "Private Instruction" to people of all levels of experience, from total beginners to very advanced and I try to make space in my schedule for 3-4 new Private students each year.
"I've taken several of Chris's workshops and retreats. Chris is the most detailed teacher I have ever met; he makes sure you understand the subtle energetics of every move. He is a warm and caring professional who has raised the standards of Tai Chi Chuan very high"
...Master Eric Eastman .... Director Kootenay Tai Chi Centre, Canada (50 year practitioner)
"Private instruction" is arguably the most effective way to learn, in that the instruction is designed specifically to address "your" individual needs and areas of interest. Additionally, the pace of the instruction is set by you as opposed to being determined by "balancing the needs of a large group" of people in a class (which may not be the appropriate speed or content for you). Personally, I have found teaching one-on-one to be far more rewarding as it allows me the opportunity to offer instruction at a deeper, subtler, more inspiring and more creative level to the people I'm working with.
"With his hard work and creative thinking, Chris has developed Tai Chi in new and interesting directions. I would sincerely recommend his seminars to anyone seeking a supportive environment for gaining greater knowledge in this field"
.... Grand Master Abraham Liu (chen huan)..... 1915-2017 (China/USA)

Synthesizing what he has learned over the last 45+ years while studying with numerous Masters & Grandmasters..... Chris teaches his Tai Chi & Chi Gong from a "Principle"... & "Internal Energy" based standpoint, which allows his teachings to be applied effectively to any "style" or "level" of practitioner....with profound results.
Additionally, from his own life experiences, he has a strong belief in the power of Tai Chi & Chi Gong to improve our daily lives and personal relationships..... and therefore has always given extra focus to developing special exercises and techniques that allow us to understand how to use these arts to positively affect our daily lives.
One such creation is "Psycho-Energetic Chi Gong" tm... A system of Chi Gong exercises that each act as a specific "antidote or balancing tonic" to various common life/psychological challenges.
Finally, being a strong believer in the theory that people learn more effectively when they are "happy, inspired & enjoying themselves"..... Chris teaches with a style that is "Technically Rich"... yet also... quite "Light-Hearted & Enjoyable"!

Though Master Luth has studied for varying lengths of time with numerous Masters & Grandmasters in various lineages.... His primary lineage is as the earliest Senior Student of Grandmaster Liu Chen-Huan who is still carrying on his lineage. Grandmaster Liu (1915-2017)...(affectionately known as "Abraham") was the first "indoor student" (1934, China) of the famous Great Grandmaster, Professor Cheng Man-Ching (who is credited with bringing Tai Chi to much of the West).... Professor Cheng in turn, was one of the most prolific Senior Disciples of the famous Yang Cheng-Fu of the Yang Family lineage.

1st NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL
** The "Golden Age" of Tai Chi competitions occurred during the first few years of National Competition in the U.S... The period from approximately 1987-1993 where, at "National" level competitions, the ranks of "competitors" were filled with an unusually large number of "Masters" and "accomplished Sifus".... and... competition "divisions" were regularly filled with a very large number of competitors (25-50+ competitors per division... as compared to the "1 to 8 competitors" per division which has become unfortunately the norm... even at the National Level... since that time).
This unusual situation was due to 2 main factors.... (1) The "newness" of Tai Chi Competitions in the U.S. and thus a desire on the part of these Masters & Sifus to "see what it was all about".... (2) Competitors were all being funneled into the "National" competitions due to a lack of "regional" events throughout the country at the time.
This situation tapered off after the early 90's as most of these high-level practitioners had satisfied their curiosity.... and had since been drafted into the ranks of judges, referees, and advisors for the competitions. Additionally, a profusion of "Regional" competitions had begun to develop throughout the country dispersing the talent pool to a considerable degree.

GRAND MASTER ABRAHAM LIU
The following is a tribute to my first & most influential Tai Chi teacher Grand Master Liu Chen Huan (affectionately known as to his students as "Abraham")... who died in 2017 at the age of 102!
Born in China in 1915.... Abraham began his study of Tai Chi Chuan at the age of 19 while a cadet at the Chinese Military Academy. His teacher was the famous Professor Cheng Man Ching who is widely credited with bringing Tai Chi to the West.... and was one of the most accomplished senior disciples of Yang Cheng Fu .
Being a particularly dedicated student and also far from his home, Abraham would spend his weekends living at Professor Cheng's home and studying with him privately.
Abraham became a high ranking General in the Chinese Nationalist Army (though he was such a kind & gentle man that you would never guess this).... and later moved on to Taiwan (and reunited with The Professor there)... and eventually to the West Coast of the U.S. in 1973 at Professor Cheng's request. Settling in San Diego shortly after arriving he began teaching a group of enthusiastic Americans in beautiful Balboa Park in early 1974.
The following story serves to illustrate the way that he was always surprising and "challenging" his students.
I was fortunate enough to be among that early group of students in his first classes at Balboa Park in early 1974... and at 17 may have been the youngest of the group (and am the only person from those early classes still teaching in the general style passed on by Abraham). I continued to study with Abraham both in class and privately at his home for many years. In 1977 I was asked by Grandmaster Lui to serve as his teaching assistant (joining my elder Tai Chi Brother Bill Helm in that role).
In 1979 I moved to Maui, Hawaii to surf.... and "practice Tai Chi on the beach". When I told Grandmaster Liu this and promised to be dedicated in my "practice"..... He caught me off guard by saying.... "Well then... I think that you should open up your own school there!"..... The thought had never crossed my mind... but immediately after arriving I did as he had suggested and founded The Pacific School of Tai Chi.
Abraham was always full of surprises.... when I moved back to San Diego in 1980 I "very" humbly asked if I could be reinstated as an assistant.... to which he responded "No.... I don't think so" (my heart sank).... then after a long pause he shocked me by saying... "I think you should start your own school here (again, a thought that had never crossed my mind)... And... as a matter of fact, I have a class in La Jolla and I think you should teach it with me for a couple of months and then take it over and use that to start your school here!"
From my teenage years onward... this humble, generous, loving and highly perceptive Grand Master had literally directed the course of my entire life. I owe much of the credit for where I am... and "who" I am today to this truly Great Human Being!
Over many years, Grandmaster Lui taught hundreds of students at his bi-annual Tai Chi Camps in the Southern California mountains and at Retreats that he shared with his Tai Chi brother Grand Master Benjamin Lo (and occasionally other visiting students of Professor Cheng Man Ching).
During his 40+ years of teaching in California, he taught thousands of students and trained dozens of accomplished instructors!
At his death in 2017, he had been practicing Tai Chi Chuan for more than "83" years!
